What is the Sports Kamado Grill?
Sports Kamado is a new BBQ company in America with roots in North Carolina, bringing years of experience in the kamado business in Europe and Latin America, specializing in high-performance, black matte ceramic kamado grills. We combine championship-level grilling technology with sports, designed for the devoted fan who wants to dominate their cookout.
What is a Kamado Grill ?
A kamado grill is a versatile ceramic or insulated cooking device that originated from ancient clay cooking vessels. Its thick, insulated walls allow for incredible heat retention and precise temperature control, making it ideal for everything from high-heat searing to low-and-slow smoking, and even baking.
What are the main differences between The MVP 24" and The All-Pro 21" models?
The MVP 23" is our larger, more powerful model, weighing 232 lbs. It offers a more expansive cooking surface, ideal for feeding larger crowds or tackling bigger cuts of meat (like a full brisket). It's designed for maximum presence and capacity, like a "Three-Down Player" linebacker.
The All-Pro 21" is our dynamic, versatile playmaker, weighing 210 lbs. While slightly smaller, it still provides ample cooking space and excels at all the same functions (grilling, smoking, baking) with agile precision, like an "All-Pro" running back. It's perfect for most family gatherings and versatile enough for any culinary play.

What should I expect during delivery, given the weight of the grills?
Our kamado grills are substantial (232 lbs for the 23" MVP, 210 lbs for the All-Pro). They will likely be delivered via DHL. This typically means door/ curbside delivery, where the grill is lowered from the truck to the curb or end of your driveway. You will need to make arrangements for moving the grill from the curb to its final desired location. The carrier will usually call you to schedule a delivery appointment. It's highly recommended to have assistance available for receiving and moving your grill.

What is the recommended fuel for my Sports Kamado grill?
Your Sports Kamado Grill is designed to deliver championship flavor through the power of charcoal and natural wood. Understanding the right and wrong fuels is key to maximizing performance and ensuring the longevity of your grill.
Recommended Fuel for Your Sports Kamado Grill
For optimal results, consistent temperatures, and that signature smoky flavor, we highly recommend using:
- All-Natural Hardwood Lump Charcoal: This is the preferred fuel for kamado grills like your Sports Kamado. Lump charcoal is made from real hardwood that's burned in a low-oxygen environment, resulting in pure carbon with no fillers, chemicals, or binders.
- Wood Chunks (for Flavor): While lump charcoal provides the primary heat source, you can add small amounts of hardwood smoking chunks (like hickory, apple, cherry, oak, mesquite, etc.) directly to your lit charcoal for enhanced smoke flavor. Avoid wood chips as they burn too quickly.
Fuels NOT Recommended for Your Sports Kamado Grill
To protect your grill, your food's flavor, and your safety, avoid using the following:
- Charcoal Briquettes (especially "Match Light" or treated ones): While some premium, all-natural briquettes might be used cautiously, most standard briquettes contain fillers, binders, and chemical additives.
- Lighter Fluid / Chemical Fire Starters: NEVER use lighter fluid, gasoline, alcohol, or any other chemical accelerants to light or relight your charcoal.
- Softwoods (like Pine, Fir, Cedar): These woods burn quickly, produce a lot of creosote (which can give your food a bitter taste), and can be harmful to your grill. Stick to hardwoods.
Your Sports Kamado Grill is designed to deliver championship flavor through the power of charcoal and natural wood. Understanding the right and wrong fuels is key to maximizing performance and ensuring the longevity of your grill.
How to Light Your Sports Kamado Grill Safely (Recommended Methods):
- Natural Fire Starters: Use natural fire starter cubes, "tumbleweeds," or electric charcoal starters.
- Charcoal Chimney Starter: A chimney starter is a great way to get lump charcoal going without chemicals.
- Looftlighter or Heat Gun: Electric ignition tools that use superheated air to light the charcoal quickly and cleanly.
By choosing the right fuel and ignition method, you ensure every cook on your Sports Kamado Grill is a flavorful and safe victory!
How do I control the temperature of the Sports Kamado Grill?
Learning to control the temperature on your Sports Kamado Grill is like mastering the playbook for championship cooking. Its unique ceramic construction makes it incredibly efficient at holding heat, which means small adjustments to the airflow have a big impact.
Here's your guide to becoming a temperature control MVP:
The Core Principle: Airflow is Everything
Your Sports Kamado uses airflow to control temperature. More air equals hotter temperatures; less air equals lower temperatures. You manage this airflow using two main components:
- Bottom Draft Door (Intake Vent): This controls how much air gets into the grill, feeding your charcoal. It's your primary temperature setter.
- Top Vent (Exhaust Vent): This controls how much hot air and smoke leave the grill. It works in conjunction with the bottom vent to fine-tune your temperature and manage smoke.
Think of it like driving a car: the bottom vent is your gas pedal, and the top vent is your fine-tuning.
Setting Up for Success
- Start with Less Charcoal: It's easier to increase temperature than decrease it. Begin with a conservative amount of lump charcoal for your cook.
- Light Smart: Use a natural fire starter cube or an electric starter. Avoid lighter fluid, as it can be absorbed by the ceramic and ruin your food's flavor.
- Slow and Steady Wins the Race: For precise temperature control, especially for smoking, you'll want to bring your grill up to temperature slowly. Don't let it overshoot your target.
Temperature Control for Every Cookout Play
Here are general guidelines for common cooking temperatures. Remember, the exact vent settings will vary slightly based on outside temperature, wind, and the amount of charcoal. Practice is key!
1. Low-and-Slow Smoking (225°F - 275°F)
This is where your Sports Kamado truly shines, like a well-executed long drive. Perfect for brisket, ribs, pork shoulder, and large cuts.
- Setup: Fill your firebox about 1/3 to 1/2 full with lump charcoal. Light just one small section of charcoal (e.g., 3-5 pieces). Add your wood chunks for smoke flavor immediately after lighting.
- Bottom Vent: Start with the bottom draft door barely open, maybe 1/2 to 1 inch (1-2.5 cm).
- Top Vent: Open the top vent just enough to allow a consistent wisp of smoke, usually a small crack or 1/4 open.
- Adjusting: Once the temperature is stable around your target, make very small adjustments (1/4 inch increments) to the bottom vent. Wait 15-20 minutes after each adjustment to see the effect before making another.
2. Grilling (350°F - 450°F)
Your everyday cooking sweet spot, akin to a strong passing game. Great for chicken, sausages, thicker steaks, and vegetables.
- Setup: Fill your firebox about halfway with lump charcoal. Light a larger area than for smoking, but still not the entire bed.
- Bottom Vent: Start with the bottom draft door about halfway open.
- Top Vent: Open the top vent about halfway to 3/4 open.
- Adjusting: Once the temperature approaches your target, fine-tune with small adjustments to both vents. For searing (next section), you'll open them wider.
3. High-Heat Searing (500°F - 700°F+)
This is your explosive scoring play, perfect for thin steaks, smash burgers, and quick-cooking items.
- Setup: Fill your firebox 2/3 to 3/4 full with lump charcoal. Light a significant portion of the charcoal bed (most of it).
- Bottom Vent: Open the bottom draft door fully.
- Top Vent: Open the top vent fully.
- Preheat: Allow plenty of time (30-45 minutes) for the grill to reach these high temperatures. The ceramic needs to fully heat up.
- Important: Remember to "burp" your grill by slowly opening the lid a few inches and letting heat escape for 5 seconds before fully opening the dome to prevent a heat surge.
4. Baking (300°F - 400°F)
Turn your Sports Kamado into an outdoor oven for pizzas, bread, casseroles, or even desserts.
- Setup: Fill your firebox about 1/2 full with lump charcoal. Place your included pizza stone or heat deflector on the lowest level before adding your cooking grate. This creates indirect heat.
- Bottom Vent: Start with the bottom draft door about 1/4 to 1/2 open.
- Top Vent: Open the top vent about 1/4 to 1/2 open.
- Adjusting: This is similar to low-and-slow, but for a higher temperature. Make small, incremental adjustments to your vents as the temperature approaches your target. Allow 15-20 minutes for each adjustment to take effe
