Sports Kamado Grill Safety Guide: Play It Safe, Grill Like a Pro!

Sports Kamado Grill Safety Guide: Play It Safe, Grill Like a Pro!
Your Sports Kamado Grill is built for championship performance, but like any powerful tool, it requires careful handling. Please read these instructions fully before your first cook to ensure a safe and successful grilling experience every time.

1. Location & Carbon Monoxide Hazard (OUTDOOR USE ONLY)
  • NEVER use your Sports Kamado Grill indoors – not in houses, tents, garages, caravans, motor homes, or boats. This creates a danger of fatal carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • Always operate your grill outdoors in a well-ventilated area.
  • Maintain a minimum clearance of 10 feet (3 meters) from all structures (like overhead roofs, walls, carports, awnings, or railings) and 10 feet (3 meters) from any combustible materials (such as wood, dry plants, grass, brush, paper, or canvas).
  • Always use your grill in accordance with all applicable local, state, and federal fire codes.

2. Extreme Heat & Burn Prevention
  • WARNING! Your Sports Kamado Grill gets extremely hot during use and remains hot for a long time afterward.
  • Always use protective, heat-resistant gloves/mitts when touching any hot surfaces, grill parts, or tools.
  • Keep your face and body away from vents and the lid opening, as hot steam and air are expelled during use.
  • "Burp" Your Grill (Crucial for High Heat): When cooking above 350°F (177°C), always open the grill lid slowly. Partially lift the dome 2-3 inches (5-8cm) and allow heat to escape for about 5 seconds before fully opening. This prevents a "flashback" – a surge of intense heat from rushing oxygen.
  • Air dampers are hot while the grill is in use and during cooling; adjust them only with protective gloves.

3. Fuel & Ignition Safety
  • NEVER use alcohol, gasoline, charcoal lighter fluid, or other highly volatile liquids to light or relight your charcoal. These fluids can explode and cause serious injury or death.
  • Ensure your charcoal is burning red hot for at least 30 minutes and has a light coating of ash before placing food on the cooking grates.
  • Do NOT overfill the charcoal grate. Refer to your grill's manual for maximum charcoal capacity (e.g., 6 lbs / 2.7 kg for The MVP 24"). Overfilling can cause damage and serious injury.

4. Fire Safety & Emergency Procedures
  • Always keep a fire extinguisher (Type BC or ABC) easily accessible and ready when operating your Sports Kamado Grill, especially when cooking with oil or grease.
  • NEVER attempt to extinguish an oil or grease fire with water. Immediately call the fire department. A Type BC or ABC fire extinguisher may, in some circumstances, help contain the fire.
  • Keep your grill clear and free from flammable materials such as gasoline and other combustible vapors and liquids.
  • Do not cover cooking racks with metal foil, as this can trap heat and potentially damage your grill.

5. Child & Pet Safety
  • WARNING! Keep children and pets away from the grill at all times.
  • Do NOT allow children to use the grill. Close supervision is absolutely necessary when children or pets are in the area where your Sports Kamado Grill is being used.

6. Placement, Stability & Movement
  • Your Sports Kamado Grill MUST be on the ground or its designated Sports Kamado cart. Never place it on tables, counters, or directly on wooden or other flammable surfaces.
  • Use your grill on a level, non-combustible, stable surface such as dirt, concrete, brick, or rock. (Asphalt/blacktop surfaces may not be suitable due to extreme heat.)
  • Do NOT move your grill while it is in operation or while it is hot.
  • Allow your grill to cool completely (below 115°F / 45°C) before moving or storing it.
  • Do NOT move your grill across uneven surfaces when it's hot or cold, as this could cause damage or injury.
  • Avoid bumping or impacting the grill to prevent personal harm, damage to the grill, or spillage of hot liquids.

7. General Operation & Maintenance
  • Never leave hot coals or ashes unattended.
  • Do NOT leave your grill unattended during or after use until it has cooled completely.
  • Ensure a clear flow of combustion and ventilation; do NOT obstruct airflow to or from your grill.
  • Keep hands, hair, and face away from the open flame. Do NOT lean over the grill when lighting. Be aware that loose hair and clothing may catch fire.
  • Use only Sports Kamado-approved accessory attachments. Attachments not supplied by Sports Kamado are not recommended and may cause injury or damage.
  • Do not use glass, plastic, or empty ceramic cookware in your grill.
  • Before each use, check all nuts, screws, and bolts to ensure they are tight and secure.
  • Do not remove the ash drawer while ashes and charcoal are hot.
  • Dispose of cold ashes by placing them in aluminum foil, soaking them with water, and discarding them in a non-combustible container.
  • Never use your Sports Kamado Grill as a heater.
  • Be aware that using alcohol, prescription, or non-prescription drugs may impair your ability to assemble or safely operate the grill.

By following these guidelines, you'll be ready to unleash championship flavor safely and effectively, making every cookout a win!
